Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), also known as corporate responsibility, corporate citizenship, responsible business, sustainable responsible business (SRB) and corporate social performance is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model.

Ideally, CSR policy would function as a built-in, self-regulating mechanism whereby business would monitor and ensure their adherence to law, ethical standards, and international norms. Business would embrace responsibility for the impact of their activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere.

Furthermore, business would proactively promote the public interest by encouraging community growth and development, and voluntarily eliminating practices that harm the public sphere, regardless of legality. Essentially, CSR is the deliberate inclusion of public interest into corporate decision-making, and the honouring of a triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.

Therefore, towards achieving Malaysia sustainable development for our future generations and to continue enjoying our natural resources, it is the duty and responsibility of every individual and corporation, including the PNHB Group, to protect and conserve the natural environment in our daily lives activities.

EDUCATION INITIATIVES

We believe that the younger generation is the key to the future well-being of our planet. As such, we endeavor to teach them about the protection and conservation of the environment through our education programs. In order to make this real, we have trained a dedicated team to manage our environmental awareness program. Over 6,000 students have benefited from the various educational programs implemented over the last 11 years, enjoying especially the adopted hands-on approach. We found that this program is still as popular as ever among the students. The aim of our program is to raise the awareness among the people regarding the importance of water and water conservation, which is accomplished through a variety range of events and activities.

One of the programs introduced to the students is the River Rescue Brigade (Briged Penyelamat Sungai) that was initiated in 1998. It remains as the focal program in which the students are taken on visits to Puncak Niaga’s Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) and dams. This program aims to educate the younger generation about the importance of the conservation and protection of our environment, especially our nation’s rivers. In 2008, a total of 3056 students from 115 schools participated in the River Rescue Brigade program. Much to our delight, we are proud to announce that in 2007, we obtained a Honourable Mention in the Prime Minister’s CSR Award for our River Rescue Brigade.

On the other hand, our Educational Outreach Program (Turun ke Padang) which was launched in 1999 is an extension of the River Rescue Brigade and it is aimed at educating young people on the vital consequences of river preservation to ensure the continuous supply of clean water. In 2007, the Senior Management of both Puncak Niaga and SYABAS visited overall 21 primary schools located within our areas of operation to deliver talks on the ways to care for our rivers and the environment, as well as the roles played by Puncak Niaga and SYABAS in the water treatment and water distribution processes respectively.
