  ACCIDENT HITS WATER SUPPLY

KUALA LUMPUR: Alternative arrangements have been made for certain areas around Gombak after an accident involving an oil palm tanker contaminated the water supply.

Puncak Niaga Holdings Berhad water treatment plant assistant general manager Azhani Sukimi said despite having to temporarily shut down the Sungai Gombak water treatment plant, surrounding areas will still get water supply.

"We have arranged for 14 tankers to deliver water to affected areas and alternative water supply will be channelled through the Sungai Batu and Sungai Rumput water plants."

He said it would take three days to clean up the spill.

Affected areas include the areas around International Islamic University, British Malaysian Institute, Sekolah Menengah Teknik Gombak, Sekolah Menengah Integrasi Gombak, the Karak Highway toll areas, Sekolah Al Amin Gombak, International Islamic School and the BHP petrol station along the Karak Highway.

On Tuesday evening, several areas in the district experienced water disruptions after a tanker carrying palm oil collided with a lorry on the Karak Highway.

This caused an oil spill which contaminated the Gombak river water treatment plant and operations were stopped at 3.30pm. Consumers can contact Puspel at 1-800-88-5252 for further information.
