PETALING JAYA: The water supply company for Selangor and the Federal Territory is keeping a close watch on the water levels of dams and reservoirs with dry and hot weather expected until September.
In a statement, Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB) said it was monitoring raw water supply and the quality of the Sungai Langat, Klang Gates and Tasik Subang dams in Selangor.
The dams were crucial in ensuring sufficient raw water supply to 29 treatment plants which PNSB maintained.
It said it would be monitoring the reservoir level and water release daily.
Tasik Subang Dam had the lowest rainfall among the three dams with only 32.40mm last month. The average monthly rainfall for the dam from 1996 to 2008 for May this year is 149.39mm.
As a result, the storage capacity of the dam was now down to 90.71%, from 98.86% in early May.
The current capacity of Tasik Subang Dam is expected to last for another 161 days should the dry spell continues.
The storage capacity of the other two dams were still at 100% even though the total monthly rainfall for May for both the dams were below the average monthly rainfall for May for each dam.
Penang water supply company PBA Holdings Bhd, however, said supply would not be a problem in the state as the three main dams in the state were almost full due to abnormally heavy rainfall last month.
Its chief executive officer Jaseni Maidinsa said the Air Itam and Mengkuang dams were almost full while the one in Teluk Bahang was 85% full.
