PUNCAK NIAGA STAFF TRAINED FOR EMERGENCIES

KUALA LUMPUR: If there is a chemical explosion or leak at a water treatment plant or dam in Selangor, Puncak Niaga (M) Sdn Bhd staff will know what to do as they are trained to handle emergencies.

Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd chief operating officer Datuk Syed Danial Syed Ariffin said the 600 workers at the 29 plants and three dams in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya had been given safety training to ensure best safety practices.

He said the water treatment and distribution company also did not compromise on worker safety.

"Our priority is the safety of our workers and residents, instead of the cost of running these projects."

He said the workers were exposed to toxic matter and at risk of explosions because they handled chemicals such as lithium sulphate and chlorine daily.

Syed Danial said this at an emergency drill at the Puncak Niaga Wangsa Maju Water Treatment Plant.

He said a major drill was held at each of the dams and treatment plants once a year to test the workers safety compliance and competency in a crisis situation.

Representatives of the Fire and Rescue Services Department, chemical suppliers, police and local councils also took part in the drill, he said.

Syed Danial said in-house safety marshals would carry out checks on the workers' emergency response methods periodically.
