KUALA LUMPUR: Water is the “blue diamond” we cannot afford to lose, said Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
“Water is also a limited source of mineral with high commercial value. Since rivers contribute 97% of our water supply, it is important to preserve our water source for the benefit of generations to come,” said the wife of the Prime Minister.
Rosmah said Malaysians should follow the example set by European countries.
“These countries have united in restoring the Rhine River that was once among the most polluted rivers in the continent,” said Rosmah before launching Puncak Niaga’s 24th Rescue the River Brigade (BPS) programme at Universiti Putra Malaysia yesterday.
Organised by Syabas and Puncak Niaga (M) Sdn Bhd, the three-day programme aims to cultivate awareness and interest of the young on the importance of preserving the environment, especially the cleanliness of rivers.
Rosmah said it was important to get the young participating in eco-friendly campaigns, including the importance of caring for our rivers.
“This will shape society’s habits and lifestyle to be more environmental-friendly,” said Rosmah.
Puncak Niaga Holdings Berhad group executive chairman Tan Sri Rozali Ismail said river pollution cases had increased by 86%.
